About Lihir Gold Ltd (LGL)
One of the world's largest gold mines is located on Niolam Island in the
Lihir Group, New Ireland Province, Papua New Guinea. The company's
workforce comprises some 1,800 staff and 1,600 contractors and over 90% of
employees are PNG nationals.
LGL mining operations are conditional upon on an Integrated Benefits Package, or 'social licence', that supplies funds for community operations and projects in addition to government-regulated and distributed royalty payments. LGL and local government, supported by Assai's technical capacity, implement a community development program that provides social infrastructure projects such as health centres, schools and housing.
Multiple stakeholders include local landowners and contractors, local and provincial government, mining contractors and LGL management. The operational environment is generally characterised as high risk, remote and culturally volatile.
Assai is working with and has successfully completed projects for LGL, the Nimamar Special Purpose Authority (NSPA) and the Petztorme Women's Association (PWA).
