AssaĆ's methodology incorporates the following steps:

  • Gathering knowledge of community requirements and culture

  • Constructing a pattern language to describe strategies graphically.

  • Implement the pattern language in a design for an interior, a building, an environment or facilities management system.

The first step typically involves briefings from community members on their requirements, an audit of the physical environment and an analysis of the present condition.

This is followed by workshops involving a broader representation of the community, in which the basic translation is mapped out. This workshop approach is important both in ensuring that the pattern language takes into account the full details of culture and working, living, and learning processes and that the community enjoy ownership of the results.

These workshops are recorded and elaborated in a clear practical framework: the pattern language for the community. The pattern language provides a detailed, strategic map for the implementation of community requirements and culture into an architectural or interior design. It can be used both to direct the design and to monitor the operation of the environment, and as a tool for continuous improvement activities.

Implementation is by standard architectural and construction methodologies.
