LGL Community Water Supplies

LGL’s mining activities on Lihir Island have directly and indirectly affected a number of villages located in and around the mine site. As part of negotiations with affected communities, LGL agreed to a compensation package comprising a combination of direct financial payments and provision of infrastructure and services. Community water supplies form part of this compensation package.

Following an initial report which investigated supplies affected by LGL’s activities in Londolovit, Zuen, Kunaiye and Lipuko Villages, Assai commenced an eight-stage project to:

  • – Prepare existing condition reports;
  • – Develop cost estimates and make recommendations regarding systems sustainability;
  • – Develop the work scope for the new water supply system(s) and a preliminary project plan and estimates;
  • – Determine technical resources required and agree on resource providers; and
  • – Hold initial consultations with stakeholders and landowners.

Assai’s consultants are currently working with local contractors and stakeholders to:

  • – Design and document the upgraded construction of new supply systems;
  • – Prepare tender documentation;
  • – Evaluate tenders and supervise construction;
  • – Provide assistance during system commissioning; and
  • – Establish operating and maintenance procedures.
